Azadeh Akhlaghi’s fourteen-year project stages and photographs pivotal moments from Iran’s twentieth-century history, using meticulous archival research and her cinema background to reimagine events as complex tableaux shot in real Iranian locations. The sixteen images—including three large-scale prints—depict eleven key incidents, from the Shah’s 1908 crackdown on the first National Assembly to the 1979 overthrow of the monarchy and the rise of Islamic rule. It’s a striking visual testimony that brings overlooked chapters of Iran’s past into sharp, cinematic focus.
